2016-2017 Season Finale Concert

2016-2017 Season Finale Concert

Portland Classic Guitar is proud to present the final concert of its 2016-17 season—and the first concert of the Summer on the Green Concert Series at Marylhurst University. Portland’s own William Jenks (who is also PCG’s Artistic Director), Chilean guitarist Alberto Cumplido, and Cuban guitarist (currently based in the Dominican Republic) Ruben Gonzalez will share the bill at 7 p.m. on July 14, outdoors at Marylhurst’s beautiful Lajos Balogh Performance Shell. This family-friendly concert will also include a special performance by the Marylhurst University Guitar Ensemble, directed by Jenks.

This is a rare opportunity to hear three internationally renowned guitar masters in a single concert. Jenks is both a performer and an advocate for the art of guitar, through his much-loved concert series, his teaching, and his high-end guitar shop. He also serves on the music faculty at Marylhurst University. Gonzalez, who has studied with Leo Brouwer (among others), won an impressive number of prestigious guitar competitions, and is an in-demand teacher and performer in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Argentina. Cumplido is both a guitarist and a composer; he has experimented with electronic music; composed for dance, film, and theater; and explored the intersection of music and the spoken word.

The program will include the compositions of George Frederic Handel—specifically, his Harp Concerto Grosso, featuring Jenks on the first guitar part and David Tutmark on the second—Maurice Ravel, Manuel de Falla, and Isaac Albeniz. Cumplido will present the music of J.S. Bach and Heitor Villa-Lobos, as well as his own compositions. Gonzalez will explore the works of Kevin Seddiki, R. Sainz de la Maza, Leo Brouwer, Roland Dyens, and others. The music is free and open to the public. Special VIP seating will be provided for Portland Classic Guitar sponsors and season ticket holders—others are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

If you cannot make the July 14 concert, don’t despair! The program will be repeated on the gorgeous Oregon Coast, in St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, on Sunday, July 16 at 4 p.m. Tickets for this concert can be purchased at the door ($15 general admission; $10 for students and seniors over 60). St. Catherine’s is located at 36335 N Hwy 101, Nehalem, OR 97131.

There will also be a slightly different version of the concert for the Farmhouse Concert Series on July 29; this performance will feature Jenks and the Marylhurst University Guitar
